STUDENTS, RIVERS AND WALKING PATHS are not the norm
at most Canadian office spaces. But the two-person in-house legal team
at Trent University’s Peterborough, Ont. campus have no ordinary work-space. The offices of Lon Knox, general counsel and corporate secretary, at Trent’s and Julie Smith, Trent’s director, human rights equity
and accessibility, are located in the library, where students mill about
while Knox and Smith are trying to get their work done. While most
office drones report to a nondescript concrete or glass tower every day
the Trent team is inspired by their work surroundings. “I was formerly
with…the City of Oshawa. Moving from the 7th floor of an office tower
in an urban setting to a ground floor office overlooking the river where I
can work and observe students climbing the apple tree outside my window for a treat on a fall day is quite a departure from the norm,” said
Knox, in a recent email interview.
