With a father, a sister, three
uncles, an aunt and a cousin as
lawyers, Patrick Brown acknowledges he pursued the legal profession by “osmosis.” But getting
there wasn’t exactly easy.
A University of Toronto political science undergraduate, the
future Conservative Ontario MP
entered law school at the age of
22 while he was also serving in
his first term as a city councillor
in Barrie, Ont.
Following a Monday evening
city council meeting, he would fly
to Windsor, Ont., on Tuesday
morning and spend the day and
Wednesday in classes. On Wednesday night, he would return to
Barrie, Ont., to attend the other
weekly council meeting on
Thursday evening.
“The only downside was that
everybody else would take a broad
selection of courses whereas I had
no choices,” Brown, 33, says with
a laugh. “I only could take courses
based on what was available on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays.”
As a result, he studied subjects
that he wouldn’t have otherwise
chosen, such as international law
of the sea and law and develop-
ment of Kashmir, which has
proved helpful in his current role
as chairman of the Canada-India
Parliamentary Association.
