Don’t touch that dial
BY DONALEE MOULTON
In the mid-1990s, mainstream television introduced a new concept on
shows as diverse as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Ally McBeal:
alternative dispute resolution. That concept has now come of age
on the small screen and, as a result, is becoming much better known
in the real world. With the exception of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and
the Enterprise crew, most of the early shows were legal dramas — and
the depiction of mediators was decidedly unfavourable and sexist.
