Redesign

building near the National Assembly.
Last year, it took over two floors in a
brand new building in the city’s Sainte-Foy district, which managing partner
Carl Tremblay says is quickly becoming
Quebec City’s new business centre.
Known as the Norton Rose Tower, the
building is closer to major highways, the
city’s airport, and the Pierre Laporte
Bridge. Because the office is more accessible, Tremblay says, the firm’s lawyers are
spending less time in their cars and more
time meeting with clients.
The office is designed by Quebec City-
based LemayMichaud Architecture
with Norton Rose’s desire to create an
inviting atmosphere for clients. The new
office features significantly more meet-
ing area for clients, and the firm even
donates the space after hours to local
non-profit groups. “The perception and
the experience of the clients are import-
ant in hotels,” he observes, “and the effi-
ciency of the space is also important.”
While efficiency is critical, Tremblay
says, office design for law firms is sig-
nificantly shaped by clients’ percep-
tions and expectations. In Quebec City,
for example, Norton Rose strived to
make the office welcoming and profes-
sional, but not overly opulent. “Design
is the expression of what you want to
do and what you want to project as a
law firm,” he says. “But, at the end of
the day, you have to be very aware of
what your market needs and what it’s
ready to accept.” n

Many firms are redesigning their office to create a more comfortable working environment, such as
this board room and multi-purpose meeting area at Calgary’s Heenan Blaikie.
