“It wouldn’t be appropriate if
you got a one-sentence e-mail
from a client to go back and do a
formal, business-type response,”
Bennett says. “That would be
ridiculous.”
Social media complicates vir-
tual dialogue even more. It’s
easy enough to explain how to
post a blog update. But there
really aren’t any rules, besides
our own common sense, to
explain etiquette.
As a consequence, manners
are often a casualty of technology’s rampage, which is guided
by ephemeral tastes and a proliferation of product features.
“I’m a major proponent of the
fact that technology can, used
properly, make us more mannerly,”
says Farley, who is working on a
book on tech etiquette titled Please
Check Your BlackBerry At The
Door. “But yet, technology changes
so rapidly that, for many of us, our
manners can’t quite keep up.”
When Ned Steinman came
across Twitter, he was hooked. He
parlayed his professional and per-
sonal interest in commercial real
estate into a daily Twitter feed.
Even though Norton Rose OR
LLP, his employer, is supportive,
Twitter isn’t his free-reign forum.
