Judge Brownstone
goes prime time
Brownstone interviews
guests on his new
weekly television show
CHRISTOPHER GULY
Oprah Winfrey and her network might not know Ontario Justice Harvey Brownstone yet—but
he’s hoping that will soon change.
The 55-year-old family court judge
recently made his television debut
as host of the new weekly show,
Family Matters, on Hamilton’s
CHCH, and will soon be seen on
other CH channels across the
country.
The 15-episode series, shot at
CHEK in Victoria over three days
this past July, is an offshoot of a
same-named online show
launched last year that he also
hosted. That show, which ran over
nine episodes, featured a studio
audience and ran for 60 minutes.
The current version only features
Brownstone and guests whom he
interviews in a 30-minute format.
And this time, it’s on TV.
Producer Nancy Kinney is
already aiming for a “major network deal” to syndicate the series
as a daily talk show, says Brownstone, who points out CBC, CTV,
Global and, yes, the Oprah Winfrey Network, have been sent copies of the program. His record to
date suggests he very well could
end up being the next big thing.
Two years ago, Brownstone
became the first sitting judge in
Canada to write a book— Tug of
War: A Judge’s Verdict on Separa-
tion, Custody Battles, and the Bit-
ter Realities of Family Court,
which made the Canadian best-
seller list and is now in its fifth
printing. Last year, he crossed into
cyberspace as the first Canadian
judge to host a web-TV show,
which attracted an average of
50,000 views a week. Now, he can
reach even more viewers with a
show that will look at not only
family law issues (as was the case
with the Internet version) but any
kind of issue affecting families.
“Brownstone believes
‘the world is ready for
a different kind of TV
judge who actually
educates people in a
compelling and
entertaining way.’
Topics covered over the 15 episodes will range from child support and mediation to open adoption, domestic violence, parental
alienation, fathers’ and grandparents’ rights, sexual, gambling and
online porn addictions and Internet dating.
“We’re talking about things
happening in people’s families that
are not being talked about any-
where else on television and have
got a real chance to educate
people,” says Brownstone, who has
been able to attract two sitting
judges and one retired judge to
appear as guests on the show.
Another dozen jurists have
expressed interest in following
suit.
