Work currently in progress
included a full entry-level com-
petencies review and validation
process, “to update and confirm
the appropriate competencies
and assessment of those compe-
tencies through the lawyer licens-
ing examinations. Members of
the lawyer profession will provide
input into this process through
working groups and surveys.”
Meanwhile, work was continu-
ing “on the evolution of the com-
petency profile for the establish-
ment of national standards. Focus
groups and other validation activ-
ities are scheduled to take place
mid-year with the goal of finaliz-
ing the profile of entry-level com-
petencies by yearend. Once final-
ized at the Federation, the

competencies will be presented to
individual law societies.”
Ongoing work in the area of
quality assurance included an
increase in the number of spot
audits in 2011 to 1,800, to ensure
that all law firms in the province
are audited once every five years.
As well, the law society was
reviewing “the risk management
implications of the contingency
planning questions in the Lawyer
and Paralegal Annual Reports
and possible next steps,” while
developing precedents and
resources to support and promote
members’ completion of contin-
gency and succession plans.
