When Jack Innes gets involved,
he gets involved for the long run.
That perseverance — and ongoing
commitment to giving back—
recently earned Innes, a partner
with McInnes Cooper in Halifax,
the Canadian Bar Association’s
(CBA) 2011 Doug Miller Award,
which honours a lawyer who demonstrates outstanding dedication
and team spirit.
“The selection of Jack as winner was a clear and simple choice.
His leadership, his people skills
and his infectious sense of humour
made him a natural choice,” said
CBA President Rod Snow.
Contributing to the community, whether it’s a local neighbourhood or a national barristers’ association, is part of Innes’s
DNA. “I come from a family of
volunteers,” he told The Lawyers
Weekly. “My parents were always
involved. My grandfather was a
professional Lion.”
Innes’s involvement with the
CBA began with a phone call five
years into his law career. An

older colleague called to see if
the Bedford, N.S., native would
like to contribute some energy
and ideas to the CBA, which was
looking to bring younger lawyers
into the fold. “I just got sucked
in at that point,” Innes said with
a laugh.
That was 42 years ago. In the
time since his phone rang, the
Dalhousie University Law School,
now called the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law,
graduate has served as president
of CBA-Nova Scotia, president of
the Canadian Bar Insurance Association, national treasurer of the
CBA, and president of the Legal
Professional Assistance Conference. He is currently serving as
chair of the CBA’s Membership
Fee Review Working Group.
Innes, who also received the
Nova Scotia Distinguished Service
Award in 1999 and the CBA’s
Louis St. Laurent Award of Excel-
lence in 2000 for his exceptional
service to the goals of the organ-
ization, came to his commitment
to the legal profession later in life.
“I wanted to be a pilot. I had a
pilot’s license,” he said. Innes also
had a wife and a father who felt
law was the more stable career
and talked him into applying for
law school.
