n;Despite the recent tsunami and
continuing fallout firms are moving
forward in Japan. Yasumasa
Gomi has joined Davis LLP / Davis
& Takahashi as senior advisor to
the firm and will be based in the
Tokyo office. Gomi has over 45
years’ experience in banking and
corporate finance. He has served
in many leadership roles in the
industry, including as Chairman of
Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co., Ltd.
and as its chief executive officer.
Prior to that, he served as deputy
president of Bank of Tokyo-Mit-
subishi UFJ, Ltd. and was chief
executive officer of the Commer-
cial Banking Business Unit of that
bank. Most recently, he has
served as senior advisor to Mit-
subishi UFJ Securities Co., Ltd.
Davis & Takahashi is a foreign-law
joint enterprise under the laws of
Japan. Davis LLP is a Canadian-
based law firm with 250 lawyers
and advisors in eight offices across
Canada and in Tokyo. Davis estab-
lished its Tokyo office 14 years ago
and is the only Canadian-based
law firm with an office in Japan.
n;In Montreal, Étienne Brassard
has joined Lavery, de Billy LLP’s
business law practice group. He
provides legal advice mainly on
matters related to financial and
banking transactions, the negotia-
tion of credit agreements and
security interests. He also advises
clients in connection with pur-
chases and sales of assets and
shares, corporate reorganizations,
and the negotiation and prepara-
tion of commercial contracts.
As a first-year law student at
the University of Alberta, Glen
Bloom liked to wander over to
the fine arts building to eat his
lunch. “I didn’t know anything
about art,” Bloom says, “but found
the environment more pleasing
than law school.”
Today, Bloom knows a whole
lot about art. His contemporary
collection has been featured in
one curated show, and he is a
charter member of the National
Gallery of Canada’s Contempor-
ary Art Circle, a select group of
donors dedicated to promoting
post-Second World War art, par-
ticularly living artists. And he is a
key adviser for the art collection
at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP,
where he is an Ottawa-based
partner and a leading intellectual
property lawyer.
“The works displayed in a law
office can say a lot about a firm,”
Bloom explains. “You can have
paintings of courthouses and former partners, or you can have a
collection that evokes a more
contemporary feel.” Needless to
say, the Osler offices have chosen
the latter path.
After first-year law school,
Bloom switched to Queen’s University law and after graduating
toured Europe for six months
with his wife-to-be. “We spent
lots of time in galleries, and I
learned a great deal,” he recalls.
With his interest in, and
knowledge about, art growing, he
became a member of the art com-
mittee at Osler soon after joining
the firm. At the time, Osler had
an art consultant who became a
sounding board for Bloom. “In
the mid- to late-1980s, I travelled
a lot because of my work. I would
be in Toronto, Montreal, Vancou-
ver and Calgary a fair bit and visit
local galleries whenever I had a
chance. When I got back to the
office, I’d share my thoughts with
the consultant who helped me
form my ideas.”
Bloom’s first serious purchase
was a black-and-white photo-

Mount Royal taken by award-winner Geoffrey James. “I was
intrigued by his composition,”
says Bloom.
Now, Bloom and his wife, a
former general counsel for the
Bank of Canada who has become
a landscape architect, have an
eclectic collection that fills their
city and country homes. “Our
interests are broad, including
multimedia,” he says. “That’s the
future.”
Recently, he gave the Mont-
real Museum of Fine Arts a
sculptural work that includes
painting and photography cre-
ated by Charles Gagnon, winner
of the 2002 Governor General’s
Media and Visual Arts award.
He made the donation because
the museum has a “significant
contemporary collection, but not
many Gagnons.”
While establishing his collec-
tion, Bloom became a supporter
of local artists. He has served on
the boards of both the Ottawa
School of Art and the Ottawa
Art Gallery, which is dedicated
to contemporary art. At differ-
ent times, Bloom was chair of
each board.
