Robert Hansen has always been
a self-proclaimed “gearhead.”
This year Hansen and his old
law school buddy Dean Novack
decided to put their mutual inter-
est in cars to good use.
The legal eagles pit themselves
against two of their banker friends
in an epic car rally all in support of
cancer charities.
“There’s already a built in rivalry
between lawyers and bankers... we
thought it would be a good fit,” said
Hansen in an interview with The
Lawyers Weekly.
So this fall the high-powered
foursome created Hammerhead
Motorsports and entered two
Mazda Miata MX-5s in Targa
Newfoundland. Every September
drivers traverse a 2,200-kilometre
course in picturesque eastern and
central Newfoundland.
Hansen, a partner in McCarthy
Tétrault’s business law group and
Novak, assistant general counsel at
Siemens Canada, were Hammer-
head I. Brent Layton, vice-
president, investment banking at
Canaccord Genuity Corp. and
Gabriel Riff, director of business
development for hedge fund Good-
wood Inc., were Hammerhead II.
