“It’s really common sense to take
care of your people. If you take care of
your people, they can get the work
done. If you don’t deliver the services,
your market position will deteriorate.”
Cherney said members of his
firm’s staff and family members are
encouraged to speak to the managing
partner if they see mental health
issues arising.
“Family members are the best
sources of information. Those in my
experience are the easiest to solve,”
Cherney said. “They can’t pretend to
hide, go home or pretend all is well.”
And, he cautioned, a firm’s biggest
performers may be the ones most at
risk as they feel pressure to continue
to perform.
Further, he cautioned, “partners
tend to explain away the behaviour of
others of their partners so they can
excuse their own behaviour.”
He said there has been a culture in
law firms that fostered behaviour few
people can sustain for entire careers.
