MICHAEL RAPPAPORT
Paddle down a shimmering
river. Portage a canoe through a
pine-scented forest. Pitch a tent
under a moonlit sky. For Todd
Orvitz, City of Toronto staff lawyer, and Jordan Glick, a criminal lawyer at Henein and Associates in Toronto, these were
memorable scenes from their
childhood attending camp
together at Camp Tamarack in
Muskoka, Ont. These are also
experiences that Oritz and Glick
sought to share with autistic
and “at-risk” youth when they
co-founded camp Ko-Ach
Adventures while they were still
in law school.
After losing touch for about
eight years, Orvitz and Glick
were reunited during Orvitz’s
first year and Glick’s second
year of law school at the University of Toronto (U of T) in September 2005. Orvitz had studied philosophy at Queen’s
University and was enrolled at
U of T in the combined JD/
Masters of Social Work program. Glick had studied psychology at the University of Western Ontario and had developed
a keen interest in advocacy and
the art of persuasion. Despite
the span in time that separated
them, Orvitz and Glick soon
discovered that they still shared
many common interests such as
a passion for outdoor adventures and past experience working as counselors in wilderness
therapy. Between classes the
two law students spent time in
the Bora Laskin Law Library
discussing the creation of a
camp for special needs youth.
“We wanted children from
the city to have the same oppor-
tunities we had as kids,” Orvitz
says. “To see sunsets and to fall
asleep under the stars.”
Despite initial funding from
Jewish Family and Child Servi-
ces, Orvitz and Glick had to
fundraise much of the money
for the camp themselves. Orvitz
says that fundraising involved
“blood, sweat and tears,” and

defuse constitutional crises.
Choudhry has been invited to join

Choudhry in a press release. He

AWARDS
The 2010 Ontario Justice Education Network’s (OJEN) Chief
Justices’ Award was presented to
Grace Russell. The award is presented annually to an Ontarian
who has made exceptional contributions to promoting justice education. As coordinator of OJEN’s
Courtrooms & Classrooms program for the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto, Russell sees to it
that the more than 13,000 students who visit the courts in
Toronto are properly informed.
countless hours drafting grant
applications. Orvitz and Glick
succeeded in obtaining grants
from a wide range of associations, businesses and institutions, such as the Trillium
Foundation, Mountain Equipment Co-op and National Bank
Financial.
They also approached a
classmate at U of T law school,
Andrew Clarfield-Henry, who
was the founder of the Toronto
Flag Football League about
holding a tournament to raise
funds for camp Ko-Ach. The
Bay Street Flag Football Fundraiser featured teams from Fasken Martineau Dumoulin LLP,
Heenan Blaikie LLP and Stike-man Elliott LLP and was so successful it is now an annual
event.
They named the camp after
the Hebrew word for strength
“Ko-Ach” and established a base
camp in Temagami in Northern
Ontario in the summer of 2006.
Ko-Ach Adventures specializes
in outdoor adventure experien-
ces for youth diagnosed with
autism spectrum disorders and
youth deemed to be “at risk.”
Currently, Ko-Ach Adven-
tures has two paid staff and two
volunteers and runs about four
to six one-week canoe trips each
summer for the special needs
youths. Generally, either four
autistic youths or up to 12 “at-
risk” youths participate on a trip.
