threatening suicide in an apartment on Queen Street. Wouldn’t
you want to know if there was a
shotgun on the premises? You
work for emergency services and
you’re responding, with police, to
a building where there’s been an
explosion. Wouldn’t you want to
know that there’s a cache of hunting rifles, and probably ammunition, there?
A failure of imagination, of
course, implies a failure of
empathy. Maybe there’s more
gunplay in city than country
(then again, maybe not, per capita, depending on the areas in
issue), but what does that matter if somebody’s child—or
mother, or father, or sister, or
brother — is in the line of fire? A
bullet doesn’t distinguish city
mouse from country.
Assuming that the bureau-
cratic shortcomings of the regis-
try are addressed — assuming
that it is made more registrant-
friendly and less wasteful of the
revenues devoted to it— how can
it possibly be hardship to sign up
your killing machines, particu-
larly if you intend to use them
lawfully, and only lawfully?
Jeffrey Miller is a writer, free-
lance translator (French-Eng-
lish), and an adjunct professor of
law and literature in the law fac-
ulty of the University of Western
Ontario. His latest book is
Murder on the Rebound, a comic
novel set in the legal community.
