how staff fight infections
Employees top defence against cyber attacks
By Grant Cameron
WHEN A SECURITY
guard is stationed at the
entrance to a business, it could be assumed
that all the information inside would be
kept safe and secure. After all, with some-
body keeping watch, there’s no way anybody
would be able to walk off with company se-
crets, right?
Think again.
These days, the wires that run into the
building are the real gateway for thieves
whose tools are a computer and keyboard.
A client of Chris Bennett, partner and in-
formation technology and intellectual prop-
erty lawyer with Davis LLP in Vancouver,
found that out the hard way.
Initially, a hacker managed to access the
client’s e-mail database and sent out notes
to customers. The e-mails were made to
appear as though they originated from Ben-
nett’s client. A day later, the hacker altered
the content on the client’s website, making
things even worse.
