Law firms can now gain access to see their reviews online

A LAW FIRM
designates a
representative who uses a password,
issued by the Association of Corporate
Counsel (ACC), to access the results.
THE FIRM’S REP
is then able to
obtain the average scores by
criterion, practice area and office
location, and index averages.
FIRMS ALSO HAVE
access to
comments by in-house counsel, who
have opted to share individual details
with them without attribution.
More information on the AVI can be found at
www.acc.com/valueindex
“With the value index, we don’t get e-
mail blasts where information is pushed
out to the membership. You have to look
for information to see how a firm rates,”
says Swansburg.
“This is probably the most discrete way
in terms of recording and looking at infor-
mation about external counsel.”
She explains that while law firms may
have been afraid that the AVI was going to
provide a forum for disgruntled in-house
counsel to “say bad things about them,”
Swansburg has seen the opposite where
most reviews share positive experiences
rather than trash outside counsel.
However, Fleming says the bottom line
to hiring law firms comes from personal
knowledge, whether it’s by way of a struc-
tured system like the AVI or through a
more informal—and typical—process of
corporate counsel calling colleagues and
asking them for “the scoop” on a firm.
